Could someone please explain what is the format of the video on DVD and CD that will play on a home DVD player.

    Sure. The ones you commonly know are DVD (Digital Video Disc) and Music CD. The predecessors to the DVD (Video CD and Super Video CD) play on the majority of players. VCD’s format is known as Mpeg-1, where SVCD and DVD use Mpeg-2.
    Other formats utilized are Picture CD (png format) and Photo CD (jpg format) mpeg-3 CD/DVD, and fewer still Divx CD/DVD (Mpeg 4).

    For DVDs It is called DVD-Video
    For CDs it is called VCD (but not all DVD players support it).
